So it seems that a Ferryland Lighthouse Picnic is becoming a customary summer tradition and I have to say that I am totally okay with that. If food is involved with the possibility of seeing whales and gannets, I’m in. If you ask me, this is the absolute best way to experience picnic life in Newfoundland
The Ferryland Lighthouse was built in the 1870's and now they offer the best of picnic foods for your eating pleasure. The Sandwich's and deserts, Oh My Goodness.
So what do you need to know, well....
I would strongly recommend making a reservation. I usually try and make my reservation a month or so in advance because believe it or not they book up very fast. As of right now they're booked for all of July & August but have some openings in September!
It’s Newfoundland, dress according to the weather. When I went for my picnic this past sunday it was just overcast at my home but when I got into Ferryland it was pouring. However we did get a fabulous treat, which I will tell you about shortly.
The Lighthouse is located about an hour outside of St Johns on Route 10, or the Irish Loop Drive. You can't miss the turn off when you arrive in Ferryland, You turn left just as you approach the Colony of Avalon & follow the signs to the parking area.
It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the Lighthouse from the parking area. Sneakers are more than appropriate footwear for walking to the lighthouse, however if you would like to walk around the peninsula you may want a light hiking boot for wandering around.
Ferryland Lighthouse Picnic's are also very accommodating to those of us who are Gluten Free & Vegetarian. The options are fabulous, all of them are. It’s so hard to decide.
They are very affordable, under $30 per person.
They are dog friendly. I noticed during my last picnic that just inside the door to the lighthouse there is an area for our beloved pooches to have a drink of water if needed.

There are 4-5 choices in sandwiches, which you choose once you arrive, everyone gets lemonade, which is AMAZING. Unless you don't want the lemonade, I'm sure there are other options. The deserts all sound delicious. It’s near impossible to choose. Ive had the chocolate cake and the gingerbread and they were both to die for.
Now my sandwich of choice is the curried chicken with mango & sliced almonds on lighthouse bread. I get it every time, To.Die.For.
If you decide to eat your picnic outside there is a blanket provided for you, but you also have the choice of eating inside which I did this Sunday past. It was far too cold and wet to eat outdoors. Now we braved the weather once we were done eating because the whales were gone mad for the capelin. We had stopped on our way into the Lighthouse to watch two humpbacks just float atop the water eating their lunch and were anxious to get back outside to see some more of the action. There were so many seabirds flying around too, lots of Northern Gannets. They are my favourite sea bird so it’s always a treat.

If you are looking for something to fill your weekend with, look into a Lighthouse Picnic- Its Local & it's a lovely treat. The drive to Ferryland is also very scenic and beautiful. The community of Ferryland is also full of history and as mentioned above the Colony of Avalon is located just at the entrance to the road to the lighthouse, if you are into Archaeology than this place is for you.
