Despite the sudden onset of winter here on the West Coast I am excited for all the adventures that lie ahead which inspired me to write about the beautiful hike I did today.
When I woke this morning it was late, almost lunch time. I was upset with myself for having slept so late and felt that I completely wasted my morning. This is my not knowing what it is to relax and recognize when my body needs rest. I immediately felt down, I was tired and wanted to stay in bed all day.
The catch.....the sun was shining.
How can you feel down when the sun is shining? Not to mention flurries were in the forecast for tonight so I knew that I had to get out while the weather permitted.
I got my arse in gear, put on a pot of coffee and began to brainstorm (with a little help) what adventure I could get myself into today. Although I desperately wanted to stay home and relax I knew that some fresh air and exercise would do me a world of good so off we went to York Harbour to hike the Southhead Lighthouse Trail.
Now, I had completed this hike a few years back in the early fall but today I knew my perspective would be slightly different. SNOW on the ground and frigid winds dropping our 3 degree temp to below 0. Immediately I was second guessing my decision.
I would regret going back home so what do ya do, bundle up and giv'er.

Guys, This trail is deceiving!
The first half of the hike is easy, nice smooth trail, some small bridges and boardwalk. Sounds great right?, then the grind begins, 330 meters to the top. Ouch!
This trail is rated moderately difficult and is one of the more challenging trails done by OBEIC (Outer Bay of Islands Enhancement Committee).
The trail takes you up through the valley behind Murray Mountain and has a stunning lookout. If you look to the right and just beyond the tree’s at the peak you will see the top of a lighthouse located just above a little place called Trumpet Cove. The views are jaw dropping overlooking the Bay of Islands with the Long Range Mountains and the North Arm Hills as a back drop.
The coastlines that make up our tiny little Island never cease to amaze me.

Along the trail there are many view points that have benches and the trail is very well marked making it accessible to all and easy to see just as the sun sets covering the terrain in a blanket of darkness.
I would highly recommend this trail or any of the others for that matter built by the OBIEC.
They have a great little site that will show you all trails in the area, the difficulty rating, length and elevation for most!

If you are hiking with your dog and normally hike with your dog off leash, ear on the side of caution as there are some steep cliffs in the area.
