Everyone gets them!
The "WB" as I like to call them, come crashing in on me every winter usually around this time. March is here and almost gone, spring is right around the corner.
I am longing for summers evenings as the days get longer. Beautiful sunsets and runs at 9 pm because its still daylight and it is only then is it cool enough to get out and train.
This winter I decided to give cross country skiing a go for the first time and I fell in love. Snowshoeing was no longer filling the void and I needed another outlet to help battle the blues! Living on the West Coast I have lost count of how many times I have heard, " You have to try downhill skiing", "What! You cant live on the west coast and not at least try it once".
My answer was and still is, No!
Many runners DH ski, I get that! Its great exercise. For those of us who are afraid of heights and aren't particularly fond of going down massive hills at lightening speed, Downhill skiing is the last thing on our to do lists. Yes, Snowboarding also falls into that category.
I will stick to my new love affair.
I cross country skied for about a week and a half before I went out and bought my own skis, poles and boots.
Next winter I look forward to learning to skate ski and back country ski.

Cross Country Skiing has helped me fall in love with winter all over again. I always joke about living in a snow globe and while it really isn't a joke, this winter has been fairly good to us with the exception of a few days of massive rain and snow melt. It hasn't been a typical Corner Brook Winter but I am okay with that. There is enough snow for snowshoeing and XC skiing, Just what the heart and mind need.
Falling into the category of summer sport enthusiast it has no doubt been difficult at times to deal with all the other seasons we experience here on our rock. I would love to be a "winter runner" but there are times when the body just needs a break and after 7 months of pounding the pavement and pushing the limits, it becomes time to rest, crosstrain and try something new.
There are other ways to help combat the Winter Blues!
1. Plan a vacation or a road trip
2. Read a good book
3. Book a day at the spa
4. Go sliding- I Bet you'll love it
5. Grab a calendar and plan what races, events, festivals or concerts you want to attend this year
6. Set a new Goal
7. Try something new
8. Meditate- Yoga
9. Practice Hygge
10. Music- Create new playlists
11. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SUNNY DAYS!!

It's okay to experience the Winter Blues. It is okay to feel down in the dumps, like you just want to hibernate until all the snow melts and the tulips are in full bloom.
The first step- Just get out. Let your mind wander and ideas blossom.
The rest will follow.
What are some of the ways you battle the Winter Blues? How do you avoid them? Id love to hear from you.
